At the CFDA Fashion Awards this past Monday, black designers, stylists, and icons were celebrated not only for their impact on the fashion community but also for their testament to staying authentic.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Racheal Scott won American Womenswear Designer of the Year. She thanked her colleagues who helped her along the way, her mother, and the women in Jamaica who inspired her designs. As she thanked her team for their endless support, she also accounts for a moment of kindness that stayed with her. “I keep going back to this idea of community. The night before our show in September we did not have the shoes for a show [and] a designer in the room who I’ve never met got wind of this and offered to let me borrow shoes from their archive. The kindness of this gesture stuck with me as this is a very special community.”
