Self expression is intrinsically tied to the human experience by celebrating our unique identities. The way one wears their clothing is a way to channel individualism, and introduces themselves to the world without speaking. Wardrobe stylist and visual creator Nikko Smith is passionate about helping women curate their own style to exemplify the person they are internally. From publishing ebooks like The Body Type Blueprint which guides its readers on how to wear pieces that flatter each body shape to styling for public figures and various publications, the Dallas based creative is carving his own path in the fashion world.
“My mother took me shoe shopping with her as a child and that heavily influenced my passion for fashion. Seeing how something as simple as a shoe change could transform a woman’s entire aura fascinated me.” says Nikko who has attributed his upbringing as playing a pivotal role in his inspiration of becoming a fashion stylist. He took that fascination and decided to go full force into styling after college. During the beginning stages of his career Nikko worked for well known stylist J. Bolin which helped to accelerate his fashion skill set and knowledge. “It was an amazing experience that really stretched me. It taught me a lot about myself. It taught me the importance of having a great team and the importance of having God first.”
Since beginning his wardrobe styling business in 2018 Nikko Smith has maximized his brand visibility through social media. By amassing a large following on social media Nikko has been able to cater to the needs of his followers. He has created content that speaks to the needs of his audience, and thus started his own Youtube channel The Style Couch. Apart from the various ebooks he has published on styling. The multi faceted creative contrived “The Black Designer Directory”.
“The inspiration behind The Black Designer Directory was to highlight and support black designers. There are so many incredible talents in the world that I feel don’t get the credit they deserve. I created this directory of over 600 designers to put their brands in front of more eyes. I want them to be exposed to as many people as possible, so that they can keep creating. I understand how hard it is to create despite feeling overlooked, so if I can be a small part of someone gaining a new customer—I’m here for it!”
Many creatives of color have mastered the art of growing the visibility of their talents while also shedding a spotlight on others within the same field. Nikko has shown what it takes to forge a path of creative living. “Discover who you are and stay true to that. Never let anyone knock you off track of your mission. Be a people person. You’re going to encounter many different personalities, so it’s important that you know how to maneuver in those rooms and stay grounded in your faith.”
