For his new Spring 2024 collection titled Nocturna, Alexander Wang taps Ice Spice as his poster girl, to merge not only the two worlds of fashion and music, but to represent through this new collection the representation of New York fashion’s classics, staples, and where this city’s fashion scene is headed.
“Ice Spice is such a powerhouse, a cultural touchstone, and a breath of fresh air. Her unapologetic energy magnifies the sharp and austere sensuality of Spring 2024 and leans into our brand codes on a deeper level.” – Alexander Wang

The collection speaks true to trends we’ve seen coming in the market since last year: tailored and cropped silhouettes, leather and denim at the forefront, grunge with minimalist color palettes. The collection as well blends what we know of cultural NY fashion staples to be – including a take on the honey wheat timbs. It seem to be the perfect homage to where fashion and style have come from and seem to be headed in one of the fashion industry’s top city.
“As an artist, I’m always challenging myself on how I can contribute to culture in a way that drives things forward, and alexanderwang is a great vehicle for that with this incredibly bold and global campaign.” – Ice Spice

The small issue I have with this campaign is this: is Ice Spice the right person for the job? It may seem like a hater comment to say, but walk with me on this. Ice Spice has not been able to garner a substantial career in rap despite how she’s shot up due to TikTok, and we are starting to see that in her performances. Because of that – how long will brands be able to leverage off of her viral moment? In addition, I am one of those who believes in the think pieces of part of her success playing into colorism, and there are other worthy campaign girls who could have served just as good if not better than Ice Spice.

Who would I like to see in place of Ice Spice? Great question. Scar Lip, Lola Brooke, or Kenzo B. I won’t deny the viral “sensationness” of Ice Spice, and how within the past two years she’s risen to the top, even having collaborations with hip hop vets like Nicki Minaj. But regardless of that – I want someone else, someone who may represent what fashion and culture truly means in relation to the New York roots of the aesthetics of this campaign and Alexander Wang himself.
