The Met Gala recently just announced their 2025 theme and the category is: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” focusing on the style of Black Dandyism and how it shaped fashions for Black men in the early 18th and 19th centuries. This will also be the gala’s first exhibition in 21 years, since 2003, that focuses specifically on menswear. Dandyism is a cultural and style movement that started in Britain. A dandy is a man who not only lives their life in luxury, but embodies the essence of opulence, elegance, and classiness in not only their physical appearance, but personal style. The co-chairs for the highly anticipated event are A$AP Rocky, Pharrel Williams, Colman Domingo and Lewis Hamilton.
Today, Black dandyism continues to evolve, finding its place in contemporary fashion and media. Influencers and designers are reinterpreting traditional dandy styles, infusing them with modern sensibilities and social commentary. Here’s a few male celebrities who truly embody the style of dandyism:
Colman Domingo

As one of the co-chairs for the gala, I couldn’t agree more that it was only right to bring Coleman on board as he continuously exemplifies the style of ‘Black Dandyism.’ While mastering the art of tailoring, he has a perfect way of embodying the vintage and nostalgic feel, while still giving his looks a modern flare.
Wisdom Kaye

Instagram influencer and fashion icon, Wisdom Kaye, has the true essence of modern day Dandyism. From displaying different silhouettes to redefining the elements of men’s fashion, he never fails to keep innovating & reimagining the style of the ‘Dandy’ man.
Jidenna

The classic man himself. Since the start of his career, he has let it be known that his style is going nowhere. A true renaissance man and he has the credentials to prove it. His sense of style exudes opulence, luxury, elegance, and more all in oneSounds real dandy to me!
André 3000

As a young black kid growing up, Mr. 3000 was the first example of a ‘Black Dandy’ I had ever seen. Reviving and reintroducing the world of Hip-Hop to ‘dandyism,’ in the early 2000s definitely shifted the culture’s fashion. He was also named ‘World’s Best Dressed’ in 2004 by Esquire magazine due to his “use of flamboyant color” and “old school, preppy style.”
Dapper Dan

Mr. Dandy himself. When you look up the definition of ‘Dandy’ or ‘Dandyism’ in the dictionary, his picture is more than likely to be right beside it. He started in Harlem back in the 1980s remixing and designing custom pieces which led him to become a pioneer in the world of fashion and Hip-Hop. Dan is the prime and perfect example of Dandy’s past and present. I mean… it is in the man’s name.
André Leon Talley

You can’t mention dandy without mentioning the late, great André Leon Talley. The true personification of the word not only through style, but throughout his life. From his caftans, to the tailoring and laying of his garments.
In essence, ‘Black dandyism is more than a fashion statement; it is a dynamic cultural movement that empowers Black men to reclaim their narratives, celebrate their heritage, and redefine masculinity on their own terms. Through their style choice, they not only elevate their own identities, but also inspire future generations to embrace their uniqueness and creativity.
