As much as Freaknik has been mentioned over the decades
about how controversial it seemed to be – leading to this year’s Hulu documentary ; nobody really covers how influential the fashion of freaknik has become. The younger black generation have tried to recapture the aesthetic of Freaknik with hairstyles and spray painted fits from the 1922 spring Atlanta party dozens of times, which proves Freaknik fashion is here to stay FOREVER..
It wouldn’t be right to talk about Freaknik without mentioning the hair! Black women who attended Freaknik showed out with crimped updos, lovely long braids, pretty dolled up ponytails with big swoopy edges and (personally) one of my favorite styles the doobie wrap, a protective style that is worn often times with pins to help maintain a blowout on textured or curly hair. The hairstyles made them stand out and shine as they party the day away with friends to 90s jams.
The fashion however held the highest power. My favorite of the freaknik fashion that is still worn by celebrities like Saweetie and Yung Miami til this day are the spray painted shirts, shorts, and skorts. White tank tops or shirts airbrushed with their name to represent who they are has always stood out at a freaknik party, along with long acrylic nails and gold hoops or jewelry to bring the look all together.
Let’s not forget the denim! Denim has definitely played a huge part in Freaknik as well as American culture in general. Denim cutoff shorts kept the ladies looking nice and right and even the fellas stepped out in their favorite denim overalls or jeans along with colorful shades, grillz, and 90s bucket hats. Freaknik was the perfect time to show off your personal style in front of the girls.
And last but not least I can’t help but to include all the young black college students wearing their personalized sorority and fraternity apparel. Being at a HBCU in Atlanta definitely meant the students would be showcasing which one they were a part of like Alpha Kappa Alpha, Deltas, and Omega Psi Phi just to name a few. Freaknik had a little bit of everything for just about everyone, which is the main reason it’s such a talked about event here in America. Till this day, many celebrities such as 21 Savage and Latto throw Freaknik parties looking at the 90s event as inspiration for their fashion choices.
