Welcome back to The Style Series – where we highlight Black fashion influencers, stylists, and enthusiasts who set trends, are innovative with their style, and are a source of inspiration in the industry. Today, we tap in with Phaith Montoya!
27-year-old Phaith Montoya has built a platform centered on fashion, beauty, and mental health, carrying a powerful message of change and inclusivity. She has millions of followers across TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube who look to her for encouragement, seeing her as a refreshing beacon of light, striving for a more inclusive world. Someone giving plus-size women greater visibility, opportunity, and the representation that is often lacking.
Advisor.: How would you describe your personal style?
Phaith: “I would describe my personal style as fun girl glamor, I love to find fun, girly clothes that don’t limit my style. I want to ensure to stay on trends while ensuring the latest fashion style be worn by a plus size girly. I am mostly casual and flirty, but I love to raise it up a notch in higher end clothing when the occasion calls for it and on rare occasions, I can pull off the streetwear vibe as well. I like being multifaceted when it comes to the fashion I wear, but most importantly I want to put on for all of the girls in my community. “
Advisor.: Your must-have fashion pieces you can’t live without
Phaith: “Currently my must-have fashion pieces are bra free shirts for summer, there is nothing more restricting than bras in the summer, one less item that I can wear in the heat keeps me cooler and happy. They are staples in my rotation for the summer.”
Advisor.: Favorite current trends and how you wear them
Phaith: “My most favorite current trends of the moment are mini skorts and maxi skirts, especially with the current Cowboy Carter era, cowboy boots with either is a hit. I love seeing western fashion styles takeover like this.”
Advisor.: One fashion item you’d never wear?
Phaith: “A fashion item that I could not see myself wearing at-the-moment are high waisted pants. I know that we have gone back and forth with low/high waisted, the trend doesn’t account for shorter torsoed girls. Though my ultimate statement is that it is the person that makes the fashion and not the other way around.”

Advisor.: How fashion connects to your cultural identity or self-expression?
Phaith: “ As a multi-racial girl, I try to keep multiple cultures in mind that can be expressed through what I wear so that others can be seen and expressed in it. It connects me to my self-expression through allowing me to not niche down. There are so many different aesthetics, and I can be a baddie one day and into cottage core the next. Fashion is fun and something that I really enjoy experimenting with. Not just with fashion but my hairstyles. I have been wearing my natural hair for over 10 months now. As many know, I shaved my head about 5 yrs ago, for various reasons but I realized that after going through that process of growing healthy hair there is almost an unspoken thing about feeling like straighter hair is more professional and better received. I had fed into that for some time. I’m happier than ever now on my natural hair journey since I no longer subject myself to those narratives and truly feel all aspects of my identity/culture is represented from head to toe.”
