A: How do you describe the work you do in fashion?
V: "My work in fashion consists of Virtual and Wardrobe styling. I curate timeless styles creatively to boost my clients confidence. Through detailed digital lookbooks and consultations, I help my clients build a wardrobe that feels true to who they are. Wardrobe styling is where I get the chance to express myself more creatively. Through collaboration with a team of talented creatives, I am able to present my artistic vision and bring concepts to life. I am also the Co-Founder of The Stylin’ Boutique. This is a pop up shop in which we sell “a collection of fly sh**” a phrase we’ve coined to describe the versatile and stylish selection of clothes, accessories and jewelry."
A: How would you define your personal style?
V: "I would define my personal style as being versatile, but always having an element of chic. My style tends to vary depending on my mood and the occasion. I tend to take everyday styles by elevating them with a timeless aesthetic every time. Whether the look is street, casual, formal, eclectic, or artsy, I make it my own by elevating it with a clean and boujee finish."
A: What influences or experiences shaped your style the most?
V: "I think the combination of culture and my lived experiences influence me the most because it supports this modern approach to everyday life while still feeling very personalized. It’s the juxtaposition between the old and new. I never wanna be boring so I may have a street look but it is balanced with chic. I may have a chic look but balance it with an editorial flair. I also put clothes on that I am comfortable wearing because fashion is just one part. Feeling confident does the majority of the work and that is what I focus on with clients. Making them feel confident in their own way. I think anyone who knows me knows my aesthetic is very unpredictable and unique. When I put an outfit on and step out it’s probably not a style anyone else would think of, but they still recognize the beauty in it."
A: How do you approach styling clients compared to styling yourself?
V: "My approach to styling clients in comparison to mine is that I like to focus on a clients personal style. I never want to change their style, but elevate it. It’s similar in the idea that increasing confidence through style is my core concept. I consider body composition when I am working with each client because I want them to feel confident. Style is only one part but our bodies are a language and it speaks for itself.. Looking good comes from within. You can always tell when someone isn’t really confident in their outfit even if it is stylish. I keep my clients personal style in mind but elevate it by recognizing what makes them feel confident."
A: How does Black culture show up in your work or personal style?
V: "Black culture shows up in my personal style because it is true to my identity and how I want to be viewed. Black culture influences my sense of style because there is a level of confidence that just comes from being comfortable in your skin. I am very proud of my culture and I tend to express that through colors and textures. Whether the look is street, vintage or eclectic, each look is personalized to be true to my identity."
A: What trends or shifts in fashion are inspiring you right now?
V: "Shopping with smaller brands and choosing sustainability is a shift in fashion that I am feeling inspired by because I am moving in a direction that focuses on being more intentional with everything I do. I would love to collect pieces from smaller brands and support more creatives who are growing in their respective lanes."
A: What’s next for you as you continue growing in fashion?
V: "As I continue to grow in fashion, I hope to incorporate storytelling into my approach. With an educational background in Public Relations, I want to grow in my field. My publication, The VokeVogue on Substack, explores living intentionally in a world that glorifies speed. Balancing my passion in fashion with my background in journalism is where I am now.. Fashion will always be the foundation but by using my journalism background, I hope to build meaningful relationships with the public and fashion industry. Ultimately, opening doors to fashion spaces I belong in. As I evolve, I’m spending this time organically growing in my community. Fashion will always be my foundation, but it’s time to balance it out by allocating more time towards what I got a degree in."
